The Mate 60 lineup from Huawei is expected to reach shipments of 20 million in 2023, giving the former Chinese giant sufficient confidence to ramp up production of future models going into 2024. With the help of the Kirin 9000S, the fortunes of the firm may have rekindled, as an updated forecast suggests that Huawei will ship 100 million smartphones next year.
Huawei had reached shipments of 240 million in 2019 before U.S. sanctions kicked in
Earlier, it was estimated that Huawei would ship 70 million units in 2024, but The Elec provides an update on that forecast, saying that the Chinese manufacturer could see shipments reach the 100 million mark. However, these numbers are just a taste of what Huawei achieved four years ago when it was expected to dethrone Samsung and become the biggest smartphone vendor in the world. Unfortunately, a twist of fate brought in the U.S. sanctions, and the rest is history.
Despite these harsh obstacles, Huawei remained defiant and launched the Kirin 9000S earlier this year thanks to SMIC’s 7nm process, and though it lags behind the competition, its existence is of paramount importance alone. There was a rumor doing the rounds stating that Huawei is rounding up suppliers to launch the P70 in 2024, and it is expected to be the firm’s first flagship of 2024, though the chipset fueling its innards is still unknown at this time.
One research analyst also suggested that the Kirin 9000S should start being used in more affordable Huawei smartphones to really kick up the momentum, though it is unclear if the company will proceed with this strategy. Also, thanks to increased Mate 60 sales, OLED panel prices have increased by $4 to $5, benefitting suppliers such as BOE and Visionox while improving their financial prospects for next year too.
However, one technology company’s gain has dire ramifications for others, with Qualcomm said to lose up to 60 million chipset orders in 2024 thanks to the Kirin 9000S, with Apple also expected to face challenges in China as far as iPhone shipments go thanks to Huawei’s resurgence. Regardless, more competition always brings out the best in companies, so if that 100 million shipment target is reached, we should see relevant reaction from rivals shortly.
