Apple is getting rid of its most affordable music-streaming tier, meaning you'll need to pay at least $10.99 per month for Apple Music unless you're a student.
The company plans to discontinue its Apple Music Voice plan this month. This option ran just $4.99 per month and allowed for unlimited streams, but the caveat was that you had to ask Siri to play everything. No calling up your playlists by hand in the Apple Music app.
Apple has already removed the option to auto-renew an Apple Music Voice plan and posted instructions on how to migrate to a regular Apple Music plan. People on a free trial will get billed once and have access through that billing cycle. After that, it's time to migrate or cancel.
In explaining the move, Apple said only that it's "focused on delivering the best, most robust music experience possible for our customers, with features like immersive Spatial Audio, Apple Music Sing with real-time lyrics, intuitive browse and discovery features, and so much more. All Apple Music plans already work seamlessly with Siri, and we will continue to optimize this experience."
It's not a giant leap to assume that Voice Plan was unpopular. It launched in 2021 alongside iOS 15.2 around the time Apple started pushing its HomePod mini, which had just launched in a bunch of fun colors. The plan was essentially for folks who wanted to listen to music on their smart speakers from home.
However, the main Apple Music plan works exactly the same way and adds the benefit of more controls and features, so a good guess is that most people just went straight for the individual plan instead of the voice plan so they could listen on their phones while on the go, too.
Apple Music now offers three tiers: Student ($5.99), Individual ($10.99), and Family ($16.99).
Amazon still offers a $4.99-per-month Amazon Music Unlimited Single-Device Plan, which you can sign up for by saying "Alexa, try Amazon Music Unlimited" on a supported Echo device.
