2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing Has More Power Than an M5 and a 6-Speed Manual - RoadandTrack.com

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you turned a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 into a luxury sedan a little bigger than a BMW 3-Series? You'd get something like this. Say hello to the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, the successor to the much-loved CTS-V, sporting a 668-hp V-8 and a standard six-speed manual transmission. When it hits dealerships, it will be the only stick-shift V-8 sedan on the market, not to mention the most powerful Cadillac ever built.

As a quick refresher, the CT5 is Cadillac's current midsize sedan. It's the slightly-smaller replacement for the CTS, based on a revised version of GM's rear-drive Alpha platform, which is shared with the smaller Cadillac CT4 and the Chevy Camaro. While the "-V" moniker used to represent the most powerful version of a Cadillac model, now it's the middle-rung sport offering—the top dogs all go by Blackwing now.

The CT5-V Blackwing gets GM's LT4 6.2-liter supercharged V-8, updated with a new 1.7-liter Eaton supercharger, titanium intake valves, and a new intake system. All that finessing adds up to 668 hp and 659 lb-ft of torque, increases of 28 and 29, respectively, over the old CTS-V. And the manual transmission returns! Standard equipment is a Tremec TR6060 six-speed with no-lift shifting and (defeatable) active rev-matching. There is, of course, an optional automatic, a 10-speed that helps the Blackwing hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. Top speed is over 200 MPH, regardless of transmission.

Like its little sibling, the CT4-V Blackwing, the new CT5-V Blackwing gets the latest iteration of GM's excellent Magnetic Ride shocks, an electronic limited-slip differential, and updated Performance Traction Management (PTM). Wheels are 19 inches all around, and come wrapped in Cadillac-specific Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires measuring 275/35 up front and 305/35 in the rear.

The CT5-V Blackwing is also the first Cadillac to offer optional carbon-ceramic brakes, which knock off 53 pounds of unsprung mass. Some time after launch, Cadillac will also offer optional lightweight magnesium-alloy wheels on the CT5-V Blackwing to reduce unsprung and rotating mass even further.

Inside, there's lots of carbon fiber trim, a Blackwing-exclusive fully-digital gauge cluster, and steering wheel buttons to select a PTM mode or a driver-customized "V Mode." You'll be able to easily distinguish the Blackwing from the outside, thanks to a wider track and aggressive air intakes in the front fascia. As with its predecessor, the CT5-V Blackwing will offer a Carbon Fiber Track Package with a splitter, spoiler, and diffuser, all designed to reduce high-speed lift.

Cadillac hasn't announced option pricing on the CT5-V Blackwing, but the car's base price is $84,990 including destination—about $2000 cheaper than the most recent CTS-V. Given that the new Caddy super-sedan is more powerful and offers a manual transmission, that seems like a killer deal to us. Cadillac envisions the CT5-V Blackwing as a BMW M3 fighter, but given the fact that it has 165 more hp than the new M3 Competition, it sounds like this Blackwing could take the fight all the way to the M5, which only musters 627 hp in its most powerful CS guise.

The CT5-V is a great sports sedan. The Blackwing sounds like it'll be an absolute monster, a more than worthy successor to the old CTS-V.
