PS5 Faceplates Coming In 2021, Creator Challenges Sony To Sue - Screen Rant

Dbrand counts as the latest device customization group to announce plans to release specialized faceplates for the PlayStation 5; in so doing, the company has dared Sony to sue. Once the hardware manufacturer unveiled PS5's design this summer, it didn't take long for fans to start dreaming up ways the console's removable faceplates could be modified. Unfortunately, Sony has yet to share whether it plans to launch customization options of its own sometime in the future.

As a result, other entities are trying to take matters into their own hands and fulfill the demand for customized faceplates. A website cleverly dubbed PlateStation stepped up to bat first, showing off various mock-ups and even taking preorders. Sony quickly put a stop to it by sending along a cease and desist order - a move that forced the seller to cancel preorders shortly before the PlayStation 5's launch. One would think such a series of events would deter others from pursuing something similar. Evidently, one company doesn't seem afraid of whether or not Sony will retaliate.

Third-party manufacturer dbrand recently took to Reddit (via MP1st) to announce it will begin mass production on PS5 faceplates by the end of this year. A release is slated for an unspecified date in 2021. Interestingly, the post makes a quick jab at CD Projekt RED's ongoing Cyberpunk 2077 drama, saying that preorders won't go live until stock at dbrand's Toronto headquarters is ready to ship. One part of the message reads, "if CD Projekt RED has taught us anything, it's that selling products before they're finished is a bad idea." In response to whether there are concerns about Sony potentially threatening legal action, the dbrand account simply replied, "we encourage them to try."

As of writing, pricing details remain under wraps, but PS5 owners interested in what dbrand will soon have on offer can sign up to receive launch notifications. For now, dbrand is focusing on developing matte black versions of the faceplates. Customization options for the DualSense and its removable plate in the middle are also in the works at dbrand, though specifics are scarce on this front, as well.

Encouraging Sony to take legal action probably isn't the wisest of moves. However, such behavior may simply be emblematic of dbrand's confidence that it could triumph if legal proceedings were to take place. Regardless, the public has no choice but to wait and see how this all plays out over the next few months.

Many a PS5 owner is eager to get their hands on swappable faceplates for the newly launched system. Why Sony has yet to even announce whether it plans to releases plates of its own remains to be seen. Yet, a combination of COVID and the console's supply constraints could explain why the company is silent on the matter. Fans are still finding ways to personalize their PlayStation 5s, though, with painted and plasti-dipped designs.
