iOS 17 updates to Wallet, Health, and Wallpapers allegedly revealed in renders - 9to5Mac

Ahead of iOS 17 being announced at WWDC in June, rumors have suggested Apple is planning changes to the Wallet app, Health app, and the wallpaper picker interface. A new set of concepts from a source who claims to have seen iOS 17 themselves attempts to visualize what these app redesigns look like…

New app designs reportedly coming in iOS 17

Right off the bat, we’d treat this rumor with skepticism. The source of the leak is @analyst941 on Twitter, who does not have an established long-term track record of accurate iOS leaks. They did, however, correctly predict certain details of the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island ahead of its release.

The source claims to have seen various aspects of iOS 17 themselves, including the new Wallet app, the new Health app, and the revamped interface for customizing your iPhone’s wallpaper. With that knowledge, the source created a set of concepts visualizing what these new designs will look like.

The new Wallet app is said to feature an updated interface that offers search functionality and separated tabs for your cards and your other passes, such as airline boarding passes. iOS 17 will also reportedly add a bottom navigation bar to the Wallet app, with dedicated tabs for “Cash,” “Keys, “IDs,” and “Orders.”

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has previously reported on Apple’s plans to overhaul the Wallet app with a new design and new features in iOS 17.

The new Health app will reportedly feature a revamped interface for the “Favorites” tab of the app. The new design will allegedly use smaller square-shaped tiles, allowing you to see additional metrics without having to scroll down the app.

Finally, Apple is also reportedly planning to overhaul the process of changing and customizing your iPhone’s wallpaper. The source says:

• All new Grid-view displays 9+ wallpapers at once.
• Delete wallpapers quickly within the grid view.
• Rearrange the order of wallpapers in a grid view.
• Share or duplicate wallpapers by swiping up in single-view.

The @analyst941 source shared these concepts on Twitter. Again, we’d treat the rumor with skepticism for now. Apple will officially unveil iOS 17 at WWDC in June, alongside updates to watchOS, iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS.

The Google Pixel Fold looks nearly gapless in first leaked marketing images - The Verge

You’ve seen renders. You’ve seen a little footage. You’ve heard the marketing leaks. Now, you can feast your eyes on what are almost certainly the first images from Google itself of the leaked Pixel Fold.

Those are the sorts of images that are the bread and butter of Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, and while his Twitter account is still private, he’s a friend of The Verge who’s happy to let us share them with you this fine evening. (Evening for me, anyhow, I’m in California.)

These 4K images won’t show you anything that hasn’t been leaked before, and you can’t see how high the camera bump is nor peep the inside screen, but they do make this phone look a bit slicker than in that brief real-world video. It’s quite a small gap between the two halves, and the rumored-to-be 5.8-inch front screen looks reasonably substantial — if these renders don’t lie.

Earlier today, Blass also leaked a render of what appears to be a beautiful coral Pixel 7A. And it’s only been two days since he leaked the new folding Razr.

Phil Spencer Says Xbox Will Forge Ahead, Even Without Activision Blizzard - Report - GameSpot

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has reportedly reassured staff following the news of the block to the Microsoft/Activision Blizzard deal in the UK.

On Wednesday, it was confirmed that the UK government's Competition and Markets Authority had decided to block Xbox's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, due to cloud gaming concerns. The $69 billion deal has been in the works for months, but the CMA said that the purchase "would alter the future of the fast-growing cloud gaming market, leading to reduced innovation and less choice for UK gamers over the years to come."

According to Bloomberg and its sources, Spencer reportedly acknowledged the CMA's decision in a meeting for division employees, saying it will slow the approval process but that Microsoft's desire to pursue the deal hasn't wavered.

The Xbox chief went on to say that the deal was meant to speed up the company's gaming plans. He explained that it doesn't represent the entirety of the planned strategy, which would apparently move ahead even without Activision, the source who was present in the meeting added.

Additionally, Spencer told those in the meeting that Microsoft President Brad Smith was drafting a response to the CMA at 2 AM Seattle time on Wednesday, while Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood, who oversees acquisitions, held a senior leadership meeting the same day.

The CMA also noted in its deliberation that Xbox making Activision Blizzard games like Call of Duty exclusive to its consoles didn't make any business sense and that Microsoft had failed to address the concerns of cloud gaming. The Microsoft President responded to the block on Wednesday, saying, "We're especially disappointed that after lengthy deliberations, this decision appears to reflect a flawed understanding of this market and the way the relevant cloud technology actually works." Smith added that the company "remains fully committed" to the acquisition and will appeal the decision.

Activision CEO expects 'accelerated' UK appeals process after 'irrational' Microsoft deal block | VGC - Video Games Chronicle

Activision Blizzard has said it’s expecting an “accelerated” appeals process after the company’s merger with Microsoft was blocked by the UK competition regulator.

On Wednesday, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it was preventing the $69 billion deal due to concerns about its impact on the future of the cloud gaming market.

Microsoft and Activision quickly confirmed their intention to appeal the CMA’s decision, which Kotick slammed as “irrational” and not based in fact during an interview with CNBC.

“When you look at the facts and you look at what the opportunities are for the UK, this was a transaction that was only going to enhance opportunities for competition, for our players, for employees, and it was just a flawed ruling in every respect,” he claimed. “And what it demonstrated to us is that these regulators, they don’t really understand our business.”

He added: “It was so flawed in every way that it is actually going to create a lessening of competition, which is the opposite of what their mission is, and so we think the appeals tribunal will see that and rule in our favour.”

The case is set to be reviewed by the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal. According to its website, it aims to complete “straightforward” cases in less than nine months, but Kotick said Activision and Microsoft are anticipating the case to be fast-tracked.

“I think we and Microsoft and our barristers, who are exceptionally experienced at judicial review, think that there’s a way to accelerate the process, and that the conclusions were so flawed, that we should be able to get an accelerated result.”

Whether or not the case can be wrapped up before the current merger agreement expires on July 18 — after which Activision Blizzard could walk away with a $3 billion termination fee — remains to be seen.

“I can’t tell you what the timing will be yet, because we haven’t filed our appeals briefing, but we’ll get a lot more detail over the course of the next week and really better understand what the timing will be,” Kotick said.

Piers Harding-Rolls, research director of games at Ampere Analysis, told VGC this week: “Historically, a majority of CMA appeals have been unsuccessful but there is still a chance this can be overturned. According to the Competition Appeal Tribunal site, straightforward cases are aimed to be dealt with within nine months but often take at least a few months.

“If the appeal is successful it is then returned to the CMA to review which again will take some time. So, we could be looking towards the end of the year if everything goes in favour of Microsoft and Activision to close the deal.”

Michael Pachter, the managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities, said he believes Microsoft can win the case on appeal.

“While successfully appealing a CMA decision is a difficult task for several reasons, we think the CMA is on the wrong side of the law on this ruling, and believe its concerns can be addressed,” he said.

“Ultimately, the ruling hinges on the CMA’s belief that Microsoft will have pricing power due to its market dominance in cloud gaming. We think that the CMA’s belief is correct, and Microsoft erred in not addressing this issue before the CMA’s ruling.

“However, we firmly believe that Microsoft is willing to concede maintaining pricing at $15 per month plus inflation, and we believe the CMA will reverse its position if Microsoft makes that offer.”

Microsoft President Makes Headline News With 'Furious' Response To UK ActiBlizz Verdict - Pure Xbox

If you look at the official BBC News website in the UK right now, the top story relates to the UK CMA's decision to block Microsoft's takeover of Activision Blizzard, focusing on some comments made by Microsoft President Brad Smith.

Speaking to the BBC, Smith didn't hold back with his thoughts, calling it "probably the darkest day in our four decades in Britain", and stating that he felt it would "discourage innovation and investment in the United Kingdom".

"The strong message the CMA has sent is not just to surprise everyone who fully expected this acquisition to be approved, but to send a message that I think will discourage innovation and investment in the United Kingdom."

"This decision, I have to say, is probably the darkest day in our four decades in Britain. It does more to shake our confidence in the future of the opportunity to grow a technology business in Britain, than we've ever confronted before."

In response, CMA executive Sarah Cardell told the BBC that she didn't agree with Smith's comments, claiming that the decision "shows how important it is to support competition in the UK and that the UK is absolutely open for business".

There's a lot of disagreement flying around, then, and ultimately the CMA has had the final word for now, although Microsoft has already announced an intention to appeal the decision, so this story still seems like it's far from over.

Leaks spill all the Google Pixel 7a specs - Android Police

If the rumors from the last few months are to be believed, the Google Pixel 7a is launching during Google I/O 2023 on May 10th. But as always, leaks have already spilled most of the beans, and the latest info dump in line gives us a glimpse at all of the phone’s specs. 91mobiles and noted leaker Yogesh Brar have teamed up to reveal new battery and display details, along with further hardware specifications.

The leaker and 91mobiles list the Pixel 7a’s spec in detail. We already knew that the Pixel 7a is supposed to come with the Tensor G2, Google’s custom silicone that’s also in the Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. According to Brar, this is accompanied by 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which corroborates earlier leaks. It was also known that the Pixel 7a would have a 90Hz refresh rate on its screen, but we now have the exact measurements: It’s supposed to be a 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED panel.

On the camera front, we’re looking at a 64MP camera with OIS and a 12MP ultrawide. This would represent a big upgrade over the current 12MP camera in the Pixel 6a, which was still good but admittedly getting long in the tooth. In addition, we should also be getting face unlock on the Pixel 7a, a feature that was previously reserved for the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro — though this was revealed earlier, too.

Another nice feature that’s trickling down from the flagship phones is wireless charging, though we don’t have a hard number on just how fast this is going to be. In any case, the Pixel 7a is supposed to get a 4,400mAh battery that can be charged at up to 20W wired — a small improvement over the 18W the Pixel 6a supports.

The leak further corroborates the pricing we’ve seen earlier. The Pixel 7a is getting a price bump to $500, making it $50 more than its predecessor. While this isn’t much on paper, this blurs the line to the Pixel 7 further, which is routinely available at discounts that effectively make it cost just a little more than the new Pixel 7a.

Yogesh Brar and 91mobiles’s claims are further corroborated by MySmartPrice, which posted leaked marketing materials on its website. These highlight some of the Pixel 7a’s new capabilities, like wireless charging, Tensor G2, the 64MP primary camera, and more.

With these Pixel 7a leaks out of the way, there are only a few things left for Google to reveal during Google I/O when it comes to its budget offering. As always, the leaks we’ve seen so far don’t reveal much about any new software tricks that the phone might have up its sleeve (save for face unlock). It’s going to be interesting to see which other Pixel 7 features, like Photo Unblur, are going to make it into the Pixel 7a. Who knows, maybe Google will even introduce some new, still unheard of features with this phone release.

In the meantime, you might be interested in picking up the regular Pixel 7 at a discount — right down to the $500 that the Pixel 7a is supposed to launch at.

Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom "Hands On" Performance & Resolution Detailed - Nintendo Life

As you have probably seen by now, the first impressions of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have officially gone live. Nintendo's already shown a lot of select footage from the game, but one thing that hasn't been confirmed just yet is the sequel's performance and resolution.

Fortunately, it seems previews have been able to get an idea of how the new entry runs thanks to directly captured footage. As highlighted by Nintendo World Report, this build of Tears of the Kingdom ran at 30fps with a resolution of 1600 x 900 (900p) in docked mode. It was also mentioned how the game was "consistently" running at this frame rate in most cases, but there were drops during more heated moments.

In our hands on here on Nintendo Life, our senior video producer Alex Olney had similar feedback - noting how performance was mostly "solid" but there were moments when it took a hit:

Alex: "Performance for the most part is rather solid, but we did notice some instances when using the Ultrahand where the frame rate took a noticeable hit. It's not like it broke the game or ruined our enjoyment at all, but it would be nice to see such wrinkles ironed out."

And in case you're wondering, the original game also ran at 30fps (at least after a number of updates that improved certain sections of the game), and maintained the same resolution as the new game in docked mode.

The resolution of handheld mode in Tears of the Kingdom is expected to be the same as Breath of the Wild - running at a target frame rate of 30fps with a dynamic resolution of 720p, but this hasn't been confirmed at this stage.

Keep in mind, this is all based on a preview, so the game's performance and resolution may not necessarily reflect the final version. The game's performance could also potentially be improved over time with updates. Be on the lookout for more details about the game's performance and resolution when it is released to the public on 12th May.

Microsoft Edge caught leaking every website you visit to Bing - 9to5Google

Microsoft’s Chromium-based Edge browser is an excellent option for many reasons, but the privacy-conscious might be a little frustrated with a recent discovery. Currently, Microsoft Edge is leaking all of the websites you visit to Bing, but you can turn it off.

This week a Reddit user spotted that Microsoft’s Edge browser has been sending all visited URLs to “bingapis.com.” When users visit a URL on their browser, that data is sent to Bing for nearly all URLs. While there appears to be nothing malicious going on here, the issue has privacy implications as there’s no disclosure this is happening and it is enabled by default.

The Verge has since confirmed the issue with a software engineer, and found the cause.

Microsoft Edge recently rolled out a new “follow” feature for helping users to keep track of creators, whether that’s a website like 9to5Google, a YouTube channel, or someone on social media, such as Reddit. As a part of that feature, Edge sends that URL to the Bing API, but for reasons unclear. The engineer, Rafael Rivera, explains that the reason the feature is sending all URLs you visit to Bing is because it is not working correctly, with The Verge adding that it is “poorly implemented.”

In a statement, Microsoft confirmed that it is aware of these reports and that the company will take “appropriate action to address any issues,” but offered no explanation of why this is happening.

Luckily, in the meantime, turning off the “follow” feature stops this action. This can be done through Settings > Privacy, Search, and Services > Services and clicking the toggle on “Show suggestions to follow creators in Microsoft Edge.”

Leak: TikTok is launching generative AI avatars and here's what they look like - The Verge

TikTok is working on a feature that will create AI-generated profile pictures, according to social media consultant Matt Navarra, who shared images and video of the tool with The Verge. At first glance, the tool creates headshots that look a lot like what you might see from Prisma Labs’ Lensa app, but since it would be built right into TikTok, you might soon be seeing a lot more AI-made avatars as you’re scrolling through your feed.

Here’s how it works. The tool asks you to submit three to ten photos and then pick from two to five different styles for the eventual AI-made photos, Navarra says. Once you do, it takes some time for the photos to actually be generated. When they’re ready, you can download them, set one of them as your avatar, or post one to your TikTok story.

The examples Navarra shared with The Verge and on Twitter pretty good, and covered a wide range of fun styles. I could see a lot of people messing with this tool to make creative avatars of themselves — much like they did with Lensa.

TikTok didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.

As TechCrunch points out, OpenAI applied in December to trademark the “GPT” in the company’s own ChatGPT, which stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer.” Last month, OpenAI asked the USPTO to hasten the process of trademarking the acronym, perhaps wanting to secure its brand after a barrage of GPT clones have been announced or launched, including a chatbot from Elon Musk called “TruthGPT.” Unfortunately for OpenAI, the patent direction dismissed the company’s petition last week, forcing OpenAI to wait out the process just like the rest of us.

OpenAI and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office did not immediately return Gizmodo’s request for comment.

Jefferson Scher, an attorney and chair of intellectual property group Carr & Ferrell’s trademark practice group, told TechCrunch that the trademarking process could now force OpenAI to wait another five months. However, Scher said there could be a light at the end of the tunnel for OpenAI. He explained to the outlet that it’s highly likely that OpenAI will receive the trademark in due time, despite the T standing for “Transformer,” which is the same name as a neural network that Google announced in 2017. Nevertheless, OpenAI persisted.

In the time since ChatGPT was revealed last fall, the chatbot has seen widespread virality for better or for worse. New research from Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology has found that 14% of employees that used ChatGPT in their workflow saw an increase in productivity—with the least experienced and least skilled workers completing tasks 35% faster. At the same time, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed earlier this month that the company is not releasing ChatGPT-5 anytime soon.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 release date reportedly pushed up - 9to5Google

With the foldable market heating up, Samsung is reportedly planning to bring the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 to the public a bit early, with a reported release date towards the end of July.

SamMobile reports that Samsung is preparing an Unpacked event for “the final week” or July 2023, likely between July 25 and July 27. All three dates would roughly line up with Samsung’s usual launch event days, but what’s notable here is this is coming well ahead of schedule.

Last year, Samsung hosted a launch event for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 on August 10, over two weeks after this proposed date for the 2023 event. The two phones later started shipping by the end of the month.

It’s not hard to figure out why Samsung is pushing things along a bit faster. Google is preparing to launch the Pixel Fold at Google I/O next month ahead of a release in June, and OnePlus is also launching its first foldable sometime in Q3 (likely in July or August, per the company’s usual pattern). Samsung pushing up the release date for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 to July keeps the company closer to those releases, rather than following them all.

Samsung’s next Unpacked event is also set to launch the Galaxy Watch 6 with an upgraded chip, a new series of Galaxy Tab S9 tablets, as well as new earbuds, and a sequel to its Galaxy SmartTag tracker.

Google Authenticator finally syncs one-time codes in the cloud - Engadget

Your Google Authenticator one-time codes are no longer trapped if you lose the device that stores them. An update to Authenticator for Android and iOS now stores backups of codes in your Google account. You won't have to reauthorize all your linked apps (or scan a QR code) just because you got a new phone.

Once you have the latest version of the app, you only have to follow prompts to sign into Google and enable syncing. Of course, you'll also want to be sure your Google account is secure to prevent intruders from misusing Authenticator.

Google is still pushing for password-free logins that use technology like passkeys. However, it also acknowledges that people still rely on one-time codes. The Authenticator update promises to reduce some of the headaches of using those codes until you're ready and able to move to another system. This might also encourage the use of two-factor authentication if you were previously afraid of what would happen if your phone was lost or stolen.

This isn't a novel concept. Apps like Microsoft Authenticator also have cloud backups. However, it's no secret that Google's tool is popular. Cloud syncing should make a tangible difference, particularly when many apps can use Authenticator as an alternative to the conventional password.
